Hancock Architecture "Living its Design"

We did it!  We finally completed (well almost) the renovation of our office space!  See our gallery page under the commercial projects to see pictures of the renovation.

The exterior of our building was renovated in 2007.  A new entrance canopy was constructed to reflect the original arch shaped one.  All second floor windows were replaced to match the original openings.  The brick was cleaned and repointed, a new front entrance door was installed, and the sidewalks were repaired.
Hancock Architecture’s building has a rich history starting in 1927 when Rochester’s Jewish community decided to build a synagogue and community center.   Within one year, the building was constructed and dedicated as the Tree of Life Synagogue.  Declining membership over the years resulted in the Synagogue closing in the early 70’s.  Since then, it has been used as office space.  Ed Hancock purchased the building in 2002 and the second floor became Hancock Architecture’s new home.  The renovation of the building to its original architectural style is an exciting project that will not only benefit the firm but the downtown community as well.

CALLING ALL FUTURE ARCHITECTS!

Hancock Architecture once again offered a career planning program for high school juniors and seniors interested in architecture as a profession. This program which began in 2002 has had 60 students from various school districts in Beaver, Allegheny, and Lawrence Counties participate. The program provides an overview of the history of the architectural profession, educational requirements, tour of the firm, and a hands-on look at an actual building project in progress. The goal of the program is to encourage local students with an interest in architecture, to pursue a professional degree and ultimately bring their talents and knowledge back to the region to live and work. Any junior or senior high school student or high school career counselors are welcome to contact Kathy Bingle of Hancock Architecture to learn more about the program.

Four students from various high schools including Ambridge, Beaver, New Brighton, and Southside attended the November 11, 2009 session.

"This past November I attended the "Exploring Architecture as a Career" seminar.  I just wanted to give you an update as far as my educational plans.  First and foremost, thank you for offering the seminar  --  it was very helpful and informative.  I have recently decided that I am going to study architecture at Virginia Tech this upcoming fall.  I am very excited to start!  I was wondering if you have ever had interns or have heard from students with an education from Virginia Tech.

Just wanted to give a quick update, and let you know that the seminar aided me in making my choice to pursue studying architecture.  I will keep in contact and let you know how my studying at Virginia Tech turns out!"

Thanks again,

Rachael Tomei, April 2010

Melanie Panutsos, who attended the career session in 2006, worked as an intern at Hancock Architecture this summer.  Melanie is starting her third year in Kent State’s architectural program and plans to study abroad in Italy for the 2010 winter semester.
